An Item is the managed engineering definition of a part, component, assembly, or end item in Nora IPLM. It brings together the identity, version, maturity, and supporting information for that engineering object. Connected child items describe its product structure.
When to use it
- Use an Item to identify something that belongs in an engineering product structure.
- Use a suitable specialized item type when the record needs mechanical, electrical, electronic, software, or standard part information.
Key information
- Identity and purpose: item number, name, description, and classification.
- Engineering and sourcing: material, make or buy, unit of measure, weight, and cost.
- Control: revision, lifecycle state, owner, and workspace.
Common relationships
- Subitem connects a parent Item to a child Item. Quantity and position describe that use in the structure.
- Item – Document connects the engineering definition to specifications, manuals, or other managed documents.
- Drawing connects an Item to its engineering drawing record.
Working with this record
Search before creating a new item. Review its identity and supporting records, then connect the appropriate children. When a design changes, use the available version and change commands and check which revision each parent structure uses.
Example
Pump P-100 contains Housing H-100 and Seal S-10. The housing has its own drawing, while the pump has an operating manual. If two seals are needed, record the quantity on the Subitem connection rather than creating two identical seal definitions.
Choosing the right type
Choose Item for an engineering definition. Choose Product for the offering that brings engineering and development information together. A File holds digital content; it does not replace the item definition.
