A reusable definition of a workflow step. It supplies the starting instructions and settings for a step in a workflow template.
When to use it
Use it when configuring a reusable workflow; users encounter the resulting steps.
Key information
- Due date records when the work is expected to be due.
- Instructions describe what users are expected to do or review.
- Name identifies the record in lists and connected information. Use a clear name that reflects its purpose.
Common relationships
- Transition Template (Non-structure): Connects two Node Templates to describe a route between steps in a reusable workflow.
- Workflow Template – Node Template (Structure): Places a Node Template within a Workflow Template’s process structure.
- Approver (Non-structure): Connects an eligible record to a Person, Group, Workflow Template, or Workflow associated with approval. Connection details can record the approval round, status, decision, and comments.
Working with this record
Use the workflow tools to examine the reusable step and its instructions. Changes to the step definition should follow your organization’s workflow ownership process. Workflow relationships are the exception to Structure-widget drag and drop.
Example
The Technical Review Node Template defines the review step reused in document approval workflows.
Choosing the right type
Choose Node Template for a reusable step definition. Node is the step in an initialized Workflow, and Workflow Template organizes the reusable process.
