Connects a Workflow, Workflow Template, Task, or Issue to an Item or Document used as a reference. A reference supplies context or supporting information.
When to use it
Use Reference when a task, issue, or workflow needs supporting engineering or document information.
Records and direction
- Relationship type: Non-structure. Associates the records without creating a parent-child hierarchy.
- From: Workflow, Workflow Template, Task, Issue.
- To: Document, Item.
How to use it
- Create the relation with drag and drop in a Structure widget: drag the intended Document onto the Task it relates to. Select Reference, review the source, target, and any offered values, then confirm. For a Workflow or Workflow Template, use the workflow tools to manage this relationship instead.
- Alternatively, use Connect from the source record and choose the target and Reference relationship from the available options.
- Review the resulting connection in the structure or related information. Check the selected records, their versions where applicable, and the relationship filters if the link is not visible.
Example
Check Pump Specification is connected to Pump Specification as Reference. The document provides information for the activity without becoming its task or process step.
What to check
The source record identifies supporting Item or Document information. Review its relevance and version before relying on it.
Choosing the relationship
Choose Reference for supporting context, Workflow Content for the records being processed, and Deliverable for an expected output. A reference association does not create or complete work.
