Connects an Item, Document, or Drawing to a File containing associated digital content.
When to use it
Use File when a managed Item, Document, or Drawing needs digital content that users can open or download.
Records and direction
- Relationship type: Non-structure. Associates the records without creating a parent-child hierarchy.
- From: Item, Document, Drawing.
- To: File.
How to use it
1. Create the relation with drag and drop in a Structure widget: drag the intended File onto the Document it relates to. Select File, review the source, target, and any offered values, then confirm.
2. Alternatively, use Connect from the source record and choose the target and File relationship from the available options.
3. Review the resulting connection in the structure or related information. Check the selected records, their versions where applicable, and the relationship filters if the link is not visible.
Example
Operating Manual P-100 is connected to Pump Manual.pdf. Users open the Document for its identity and revision, then access the PDF through the File connection.
What to check
The managed record points to the content associated with it. Check that the selected file belongs to the intended record version.
Choosing the relationship
Choose File when the target is uploaded content. Choose Item – Document or Drawing when the target is a managed information record. Uploading content and connecting it may be separate steps.
